AAUW members take action at the local, state and national level:
From ProChoiceNC:
Legislators in both the North Carolina House and Senate have just filed bills to codify the protections of Roe v Wade in our state! This is an incredible first step to ensuring all people in North Carolina will be able to get abortion care when they need it, no matter what happens when the U.S. Supreme Court releases its decision in Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization in the next few weeks.
The Senate bill, Codify Roe and Casey Protections (SB 888), ensures the nearly 50-year legal precedent set in Roe that prohibits states from creating arbitrary restrictions or outright banning abortion will still be in place in North Carolina, even if Roe is overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. Please join us in thanking the Senators who sponsored this bill.
Primary Sponsors of SB 888
Sen. Natasha Marcus (SD 41)
Sen. Jay Chaudhuri (SD 15)
Sen. Natalie Murdock (SD 20)
The House bill, the Reproductive Freedom Act (HB 1119) goes even further than codifying Roe. This bill will not just guarantee that people can legally access abortion in our state, but also remove many of the medically unnecessary and ideological barriers to care that have existed for far too long in our state, such as the unjust bans on insurance coverage of abortion and the ban on telemedicine for medication abortion. Please join us in thanking the Representatives who sponsored this bill.
Primary Sponsors of HB 1119
Rep. Marcia Morey (HD 30)
Rep. Carla Cunningham (HD 106)
Rep Julie von Haefen (HD 36)
Can you also join us in calling on other legislators to co-sponsor these critical bills? Members of the NC Senate have until noon on Tuesday, May 31st, and members of the NC House have until 5pm on Wednesday, June 1st to sign on as a co-sponsor.
Don’t know who your state Representative and Senator is? You can find their information here, as well as their office phone number. https://ncleg.gov/FindYourLegislators

HB 755 would require NC schools to inform parents of lessons, changes at school and school resources.

A “Parent’s Bill of Rights” sounds good doesn’t it? But is this bill really about parents protecting their children, or does it put more restrictions and stress on our North Carolina teachers. Many LGBTQ students report having felt safe in “coming out” to their teachers even before telling their parents. Our schools and teachers have a right to support every student. Shouldn’t NC politicians be looking for ways to provide more resources for our teachers instead of new ways to restrict how and what they teach? Hear more about this proposal on Greensboro’s WFMY New2 broadcast 5/24/22. WFMY News2. Then take action by contacting your NC legislator.
- Have you approached your local county leaders regarding removing salary history from their hiring practices? A recent AAUW-NC (Western Carolina University branch) review of NC counties’ applications showed that Durham and Chatham counties still include salary history on their applications.
