AAUW TEA WITH LEE SMITH
Wednesday, March 6 2013
3-5 pm at Carol Woods
The Chapel Hill Chapter of AAUW is honored to have noted author Lee Smith as its keynote speaker for the annual Women’s History Month fundraiser. Born in a small town in Appalachia (Grundy, VA), she was a voracious reader and began writing at an early age. A Hollins College graduate, Lee’s talent was recognized her senior year; she submitted the first draft of a novel, and was awarded a fellowship. Lee married and with the advent of two boys, she struggled to find time to write. Nevertheless, she has published fifteen novels and four collections of short stories since 1968. She also taught at NC State University for nineteen years. Her books include: Black Mountain Breakdown (1980), Fair and Tender Ladies (1988), Saving Grace (1995), The Last Girls (2001), and On Agate Hill (2006). Among her many literary awards are: O. Henry Awards, 1979 and 1981, Robert Penn Warren Prize for Fiction, 1991, Thomas Wolfe Award, 2010 and the Lifetime Literary Achievement Award from the State of Virginia, 2010.
We would love for you to join us!
